Among people dreaming of rapid weight loss, the obesity medicine Wegovy is emerging as a miracle injection. However, there are things you must know before using it.

Recently, YouTuber and broadcaster Pani Bottle (real name Park Jae-han, 38) drew attention by revealing he had lost 10 kg with Wegovy. But he also voiced concern about side effects, saying, “The nausea keeps continuing.” Comedian Kim Jun-ho likewise complained after taking Wegovy: “I can’t eat or sleep properly. Both my appetite and desire to sleep have decreased.”

As interest in Wegovy grows, indiscriminate attempts to take it and self-prescribing based on blind faith in social-media reviews are prompting warnings.

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist for obesity, given by subcutaneous injection once a week. It is based on semaglutide, previously used for diabetes. The medicine reduces appetite and increases satiety to induce weight loss. Full-scale prescribing in Korea is scheduled from late 2024, and public interest is surging through examples of Hollywood stars and Korean celebrities using it.

Like other medicines, however, Wegovy can have side effects and requires caution. Common examples include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, particularly when first starting or increasing the dose. Most improve over time, but if symptoms persist or are severe, stop immediately and consult medical staff.

Be sure to remember these five precautions:

Medical consultation is essential. Wegovy is not simply a dieting pill; it is treatment requiring a doctor’s consultation and careful stepwise prescribing. Safe use involves accurately identifying the causes of obesity and current health, then setting a target weight and corresponding lifestyle plan together.

The dose must increase gradually. Wegovy is increased slowly through four stages over 16 weeks. Starting at a high dose can cause severe gastrointestinal-related effects such as nausea, vomiting and lethargy. Some patients stop treatment or use excessive doses; this is extremely dangerous.

Medication alone does not complete weight management. Obesity treatment, including body-shape or weight-related surgery and procedures, always requires reviewing eating habits, sleep patterns and exercise. Wegovy may assist weight loss, but without lifestyle changes, weight often returns quickly.

It is not suitable for everyone. Medication may be needed for extreme obesity or obesity accompanied by joint pain or metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Using it for appearance or a short-term diet may increase adverse-effect risks. A history of pancreatitis or current pancreatic abnormalities requires a specialist consultation before deciding on use.

Care after weight loss is important. After reaching the target, reducing or stopping the medicine while observing the body’s response is essential. Maintaining eating and exercise habits then is necessary for a healthy weight without rebound. Losing weight once is not the end. Manage lifestyle for at least three to six months to check whether weight can be maintained without medicine.

Medication remains a supportive tool. Wegovy and other obesity medicines can help when used correctly, but expectation-driven, unquestioning prescribing can damage health. As celebrity reviews and social-media stories of “weight loss without consequences” grow popular, clinical warnings and guidance become more necessary. You know your health best. Above all, treatment should begin correctly, not merely quickly.
