Summer golf strains more than your stamina—it also burdens your skin. Sweat, dust, and sunscreen build up during a round, often blocking pores and causing inflammation. Here is how to manage sebum and breakouts properly when summer skin feels sticky.

The Irritation Summer Golf Leaves on Skin

Hot, humid weather and strong UV exposure, combined with friction from masks and hats, sharply increase sebum production and make acne and spots more likely. Heavy sweat, dust, and sunscreen often clog pores during a round. Cleansing alone may fail to remove debris sufficiently, making inflammation more likely.

Breakouts occur not only where sun and sweat concentrate—the forehead, nose bridge, and jawline—but also where masks, hats, and sunglasses create pressure and damp heat. Many patients visiting SEOLREIM CLINIC report small, heat-rash-like bumps immediately after summer rounds. Oily skin with active sebum production is particularly prone to closed comedones. Indiscriminate use of scrubs or alcohol-based toners can then damage the skin barrier and worsen symptoms.

Kim Jung-hoon, in his 40s, said, ‘Every time I play summer golf, spots appear around my cheeks and become inflamed after a few days. The mask seems to make them worse.’ Park Su-jin, in her 30s, said, ‘I sweat more on hot days, my face keeps looking shiny, and my makeup slides off. I’m worried because my skin feels rougher and my pores seem larger.’

Summer golf exposes the skin to both immediate and cumulative irritation.

After a Summer Round, Address Skin Heat First

First, lower the skin’s temperature and soothe it. Before the round, apply a noncomedogenic hydrating sunscreen and smooth the surface with a sebum-control base. During play, wipe away sweat, then use a cooling mist or oil-control tissue to manage both temperature and sebum.

After the round, thoroughly remove pore debris with a two-step cleansing routine combining a mildly acidic cleanser and a fine-foam cleanser. Follow with an ampoule or hydrating mask containing soothing ingredients such as centella asiatica (CICA), allantoin, or panthenol to support recovery.

The hairline, behind the ears, nape, and underside of the chin are easily neglected. Sweat collects there and inflammation can develop, so use soothing wipes or anti-inflammatory powder regularly. In summer, when dead skin builds up easily, a gentle routine with mildly acidic toner and low-concentration AHA or BHA products is preferable to harsh scrubs.

Do Not Miss Your Skin’s Warning Signs

Typical summer warning signs include recurrent chin and cheek breakouts, spreading red heat-rash-like patches, enlarged pores, and roughened texture. Consult a specialist particularly if inflammatory acne appears along the mask line or pigmentation increases rapidly after a round.

Summer UV and humidity are a double burden for skin. As temperatures rise above 28°C and humidity increases, sebum production and skin friction increase. Pay particular attention to areas beneath caps and sunglasses, where sweat accumulates and pigmentation may develop.

Skin responds differently with each season. To enjoy summer golf healthily, care for skin condition as carefully as physical fitness. Preventive routines and immediate soothing care are essential to protect skin amid sweat and heat.

Skin Prescription

Use a light, fresh hydrating sunscreen—switch to a noncomedogenic product: Because sebum production rises in summer, sunscreen that does not clog pores is important. Choose a highly hydrating product with little stickiness.

A gentle two-step cleanse—mildly acidic cleanser plus fine-foam cleanser: Cleanse first with a mildly acidic cleanser, then again with a fine-foam cleanser. This effectively removes residual waste and debris from pores.

Control skin temperature and sebum—use cooling mist, a hydrating gel mask, and oil-control patches: Add cooling mist or a hydrating gel mask to reduce sweat-related heat and manage sebum. As time passes, oil-control patches can help in oily areas.

Use soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients—ampoules and creams with CICA, allantoin, panthenol, or green tea: If skin is irritated or shows inflammation, soothe it with an ampoule or cream containing calming ingredients.

Introduce a gentle exfoliation routine—mildly acidic toner plus gentle AHA/BHA: Dead skin builds up easily in summer. Care for it with mildly acidic toner and gentle AHA/BHA products. Avoid excessive use of abrasive scrubs.

Care for overlooked areas where sebum collects—use soothing wipes or anti-inflammatory powder at the hairline, behind the ears, and nape: Frequently treat sweat-prone areas, including behind the ears, beneath the chin, and the nape, with soothing wipes or powder containing anti-inflammatory ingredients to help prevent inflammation.
